Celios Study Findings: Economic Losses from the Sumatra Flood Disaster
🗣️The ecological disaster in Sumatra in November 2025 is projected to have caused economic losses of Rp68.67 trillion. This figure includes damage to residents’ homes, loss of household income, damage to road and bridge infrastructure, and lost agricultural production from farmland inundated by floods and landslides.
🗣️Specifically, Aceh Province is projected to have suffered losses of Rp2.2 trillion. North Sumatra is projected to have lost Rp2.07 trillion and West Sumatra Rp2.01 trillion.
🗣️The ecological disaster was triggered by land conversion driven by oil palm deforestation and mining. Meanwhile, the contributions of mining and oil palm to Aceh Province, for example, are not commensurate with the losses caused by the disaster.
🗣️Celios is calling for an immediate moratorium on mining permits and oil palm plantation expansion. It is time to transition to a more sustainable economy—a restorative economy. Without changes to the economic structure, ecological disasters will recur, with far greater economic losses.
